I am a livestock farmer
As a livestock farmer, your animals are not just pets—they’re an important part of your daily life and work. Law 4830/2021 provides vital support to help you take care of your farm dogs, ensuring they have a happy, healthy life while complying with the law.
Key Responsibilities:
- Microchipping & Registration:
- It’s mandatory to microchip and register your farm dogs in the National Companion Animal Registry (EMZS).
- Failure to do so results in a 300€ fine. But don’t worry—livestock farmers receive free microchipping for their dogs under the law!
- Free Neutering & DNA Testing:
- To prevent unwanted litters and promote better health and behavior, neutering is required for all dogs. Livestock farmers are entitled to free neutering services for their farm dogs.
- If you prefer not to neuter, you can alternatively submit a DNA sample free of charge, helping you avoid fines and ensuring your farm dogs remain under control. To receive this service for free, your dog must be registered as a livestock guardian dog in the National Pet Registry (EMZS). The veterinary procedure can be provided at no cost if it is performed by a municipal veterinarian or a veterinarian contracted with the municipality. If you opt to visit a private veterinarian, the administrative fee will still be waived for you. However, the veterinary procedure may cost up to €50 plus shipping cost.
- Failing to neuter or DNA sample your pet, and ensuring it appears accordingly in the EMZS, by January 1st, 2026, will result in a 1000€ fine.
- Provide Proper Nutrition & Care:
- Feed your dog age-appropriate food and provide clean water. A poor diet can lead to health issues. Avoid harmful foods like chocolate, grapes, and garlic!
- Regular veterinary care is crucial to prevent diseases and ensure a long, happy life.
- Offer a Safe, Comfortable Living Space:
- Dogs need secure shelter—no barrels or unsafe structures. Tethering dogs for longer than 2 hours can result in hefty fines of 1000 for tethering. Daily exercise is vital.
- Health & Hygiene:
- Deworm regularly and keep up with vaccinations, including rabies. Annual vet visits are required by law and protect your pet from serious health risks.
- Keep your pet’s health records updated. Non-compliance could cost you 1000€!
Why It Matters:
- By taking care of your farm dogs with these free services, you’re not only staying compliant with the law but also ensuring they contribute positively to your farm’s operations, from guarding to herding and more.
- Free veterinary services help reduce costs, and they ensure your animals are healthy, preventing the spread of diseases that could affect other livestock or crops.
Farmers, take full advantage of the free services and legal support available to you.
Care for your farm dogs responsibly—because they deserve the best, and so do you!
Legal Consequences for Abandonment & Abuse:
Abandoning or abusing an animal is a criminal offense, with fines ranging from 5000€ to 50000€ and possible imprisonment. Always ensure you are fully prepared to care for your pet throughout their life.
