I am not a pet owner but would like to get involved
Crete’s street dog population is growing—and it’s a problem we can no longer afford to ignore.
Across the island, municipalities are spending valuable resources trying to manage the rise in unwanted dogs and cats living on our streets—funds that could be used for schools, parks, and community services. Meanwhile, shelters are overflowing, and animal welfare groups are stretched to their limits. We’re all feeling the impact.
Here’s the hard truth:
An unneutered male can mate with countless female dogs in just five years – leading to the births of thousands of unwanted puppies. And without action, many of them will end up abandoned, adding to the cycle.
But here’s the good news: we can stop this. Together.
We need every pet owner to step up and be part of the solution. That means:
- Microchipping and registering your pets in the National Pet Registry (EMZS), and
- Neutering your pets—or, if that’s not possible, submitting a DNA sample.
- Failing to neuter (or provide DNA) by January 1st 2026 exposes you to a 1000€ fine.
It’s like an overflowing bathtub: mopping the floor won’t help if the tap is still running. Let’s turn off the tap—once and for all.
- Spread the message.
- Use our resources.
- Download and share our materials.
- Talk to friends, neighbors, and your vet.
- Reach out—we’re here to help.
When every pet is accounted for, we all benefit: fewer strays, stronger communities, and smarter use of public funds.
Let’s work together for a Crete where no animal is left behind.
Be part of the solution.
