What is neutering and why is it important

Neutering (spaying for females, castration for males) is a simple surgical procedure that removes the reproductive organs and prevents pets from reproducing. It’s an act of responsibility that improves your pet’s health and helps reduce the number of stray animals.
? Why Neuter?
• Prevents unwanted litters: Prevents the births, reduces overpopulation and reduces abandoned pets that would end up stray and suffer on the street.
• Boosts health: Lowers risk of serious diseases like cancer and infections. For females, it reduces the risk of mammary, ovarian, and uterine cancers, as well as life-threatening pyometra (a uterine infection). For males, it lowers the risk of testicular cancer and prostate issues like prostatitis. Additionally, it decreases the likelihood of infections and other diseases, promoting overall health and longevity.
• Improves behavior: Neutered animals often exhibit calmer and more sociable behavior. Male animals that are unable to breed are less likely to show aggression or try to escape to find a mate.
• Cuts costs: Fewer litters mean fewer expenses for owners and fewer vet costs but it also means fewer costs for shelters and municipalities.
Shelters and municipalities bear the financial burden but with less strays, this money can be spent more efficiently.

? What the Law Requires
(Law 4830/2021) If you don’t neuter your pet, you must submit a DNA sample to the National Pet DNA Database (EΦΑΓΥΖΣ) by July 1, 2025.
• Neuter within 6 months of adopting a pet over 1 year old.
• For pets under 1 year, neuter within 6 months after they turn one.
• Must be recorded in the National Pet Register.
• Fine: €1000 for non-compliance.

! Tip: Talk to your vet
If neutering isn’t possible for medical reasons, DNA submission is mandatory.
